A new study examined whether giving physicians individual performance reports could reduce the high use of procedures that keep blood in leg veins flowing toward the heart and not pooling as a result of high blood pressure or blood clots. Researchers saw a reduction in 2019 among “outlier” physicians, or those who performed 3.4 or more of these procedures per patient over an extended period vs. in one day. Medicare cost savings from the reduction were estimated at $6.3 million.
