Adverse action reports for registered and practical nurses have increased more than 600% since 1996, but have fallen since peaking at more than 25,000 in 2016. Meanwhile, medical malpractice payment reports have been comparitively flat over the same period and have also declined in recent years.

The Health and Human Services Department defines an adverse action report as: “(1) An action taken against a practitioner’s clinical privileges or medical staff membership in a healthcare organization; (2) a licensure disciplinary action; (3) a Medicare/Medicaid exclusion action; or (4) any other adjudicated action.”
A medical malpractice payment report is defined as: “A monetary exchange as a result of a settlement or judgment of a written complaint or claim demanding payment based on a physician’s, dentist’s or other licensed healthcare practitioner’s provision of or failure to provide healthcare service.”
